DIY Gatorade Recipe: Electrolyte Replacement for Travelers

Unfortunately 40-60% of tourists traveling to undeveloped countries suffer from Traveler’s Diarrhea.  Despite great effort to avoid it, even savvy travelers find themselves trapped in the bathroom.  For this reason, I make a DIY Gatorade concoction ahead of time and pack it in my bag.

DIY Gatorade Recipe

  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • Add ingredients to 1 liter (a little over 4 cups) of CLEAN drinking water.

The electrolyte ratio isn’t the same as Gatorade, and it definitely won’t taste as good, but it will do the trick.  It should be used in cases of severe diarrhea (more than 4 episodes in a day plus another symptom including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping).
